The Legal and Compliance team at PayU plays a strategic role in enabling business growth while ensuring adherence to regulatory and legal frameworks.

 

About the Role

To support PayU’s growth plans in India for payments and fintech opportunities, PayU is looking for a legal counsel with strong background of banking, financing, fintech, capital markets, general corporate or technology (and vendor contracts) related legal work together with a possible background in payments, credit and/or other financial services.

The role will be responsible for handling a variety of work involving legal and regulatory aspects of domestic and cross boarder payments business, banking alliances, new fintech products, drafting and streamlining of documentation and negotiations with regard to different types of agreements related to the payments business.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Ability to work in a highly dynamic environment and collaboration with various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to think through original new products, expansion into new market verticals and areas relating to innovative fintech and financial solutions.
  • The ability to provide time-sensitive support on a wide array of legal and regulatory issues in connection with all aspects of PayU's operations in India, along with the ability to conduct research and form views across different legislations and regulations governing various sectors in India.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts, including non-disclosure agreements, service agreements, service level agreements, amendment agreements, memorandum of understanding, letters of intent etc.
  • Own the full contract lifecycle including drafting, redlining, negotiation, finalization, execution, and post-signing compliances.
  • Ensure that contracts align with legal and regulatory requirements, corporate policies, and industry best practices.
  • Participate in contract negotiations with external parties including merchants, banks, vendors, demonstrating strong negotiation skills to achieve favorable terms and outcomes for the organization.
  • Develop and maintain contract templates and standard clauses to streamline the contract drafting process and contribute to playbooks, negotiation strategies, and process improvements to reduce contract closure timelines.
  • Drafting and reviewing data processing agreements, updating policies and processes, and assisting in overall implementation of the organizations data privacy framework.
  • Liaising with international consultants/ advisors to advise the organization on global data protection laws and its requirements.
  • Assist the organization by keeping abreast of new legislation and regulatory developments that may impact the business.
  • Strong drafting and communication (both written and oral) skills in English.
  • Key personalities: Efficient, punctual, responsible, transparent, reliable and accountable.

Requirements:

  • The ideal candidate will be an independent, result oriented, self-motivated individual who enjoys working in a fast paced, international, dynamic, and diverse environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in law from a recognised Indian institute
  • 3 to 6 years’ professional experience with a reputed law firm and/or reputable corporate entity or financial institution. Initial background of working with a law firm on M&A, general corporate, banking, capital markets, technology, intellectual property, privacy or financing legal work will be a definite plus.
  • Experience in working with B2B and B2C fintech companies, investment firms or other financial services will be viewed favourably.
  • Experience in Indian laws and regulations concerning one or more of payment aggregation, banking, NBFCs, digital payments, financial services, fintech businesses, , prepaid payment instruments, bill payments, capital markets, intellectual property and technology.
  • Experience in developing and implementing processes for efficient and streamlined operations surrounding contract negotiations and processes.
  • Additional experience in litigation will be viewed favorably.
